The Problem with ‘Standard’ Cabinets in Small Spaces
If you are trying to fit a kitchen into a tight space, standard off-the-shelf flat packs are your worst enemy. Modular cabinets come in set widths (usually in 100mm increments). When you try to fit them between two fixed walls, you inevitably end up with leftover gaps.
Standard practice with flat-pack kitchens is to cover these gaps with blank ‘filler panels’. In a large kitchen, losing 80mm to a filler panel isn’t a disaster. In a compact villa, that 80mm is prime real estate that could have housed your chopping boards, baking trays, or a pull-out spice rack.

Leaving a 200mm gap above your overhead cupboards does nothing but collect dust and greasy residue. By extending the cabinetry to the ceiling, you gain an entire top tier of storage. While you won’t use these high shelves for everyday plates, they are the perfect home for seasonal items—Christmas platters, the slow cooker you use all winter, or the bulky sandwich press.
Drawers Over Doors (The Golden Rule)
If you take one piece of advice from this guide, make it this: prioritize drawers for all your lower cabinetry.
Standard base cupboards are highly inefficient. To reach a pot at the back, you have to get on your hands and knees, remove the items at the front, and dig around in the dark. In a narrow galley kitchen, having a cupboard door swung wide open blocks the entire walkway.
Deep, heavy-duty drawers bring the contents out to you. A bank of three drawers uses the exact same vertical space as a standard cupboard, but allows you to pack items much more densely while keeping everything visible from above. We use premium soft-close hardware on all our drawers, meaning they can handle the weight of cast-iron pans and stackable crockery without sagging.
The Magic of the Pull-Out Pantry
The walk-in pantry is a luxury that compact homes simply can’t accommodate. But you don’t need a walk-in room to store a massive amount of food.
A full-height pull-out pantry is an absolute game-changer for small kitchens. Often just 300mm or 400mm wide, these units feature a heavy-duty internal wirework system attached to the cabinet door. When you pull the handle, the entire contents of the pantry slide out into the room. You can access your dry goods from both sides, nothing gets lost at the back, and it requires a fraction of the floor space of a traditional pantry.
Conquering the Corner Cabinet
In a small kitchen, L-shaped and U-shaped layouts are common, which means you have to deal with the dreaded ‘blind corner’. This is the deep, dark void where old Tupperware goes to disappear.
Rather than leaving this as dead space or an awkward cupboard, we integrate smart corner hardware like a ‘Le Mans’ unit or a corner carousel. These kidney-shaped shelves swing entirely out of the cabinet on articulated arms, utilizing 100% of the corner space and making it effortlessly accessible.
